We Hungarians are a nation of action. We are there where the help is needed. We are proud that, thanks to Hungary, we were able to open the Meltho "Világosság" International School in Erbil today, wrote the head of state Katalin Novák, who is in Iraq from Thursday to Saturday, in her Facebook post.

His visit is of historical significance, as it is the first time that a Hungarian president has traveled to a Middle Eastern country.

Katalin Novák also shared on her Instagram page that at the opening of the school, the students sing the song "Spring wind blows water" in her honor.

"We Hungarians are people of action," said President Katalin Novák at the school opening ceremony in the center of the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

On the last day of his visit to Iraq, the head of state handed over the international school, established with the support of the Hungary Helps Program, in a joint ceremony with Masrur Barzani, the prime minister of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region.

As Christians, we need to help each other

- said the head of state. - As the first female President of the Republic of my country, I hope that by handing over the school, we will also contribute to strengthening the role of women - added Katalin Novák in her speech.

On Saturday, the President of the Republic also visited the military camp in Erbíl, Iraq, where he met Hungarian soldiers.

We Hungarians are pro-peace, we don't want war, we want peace in our homes, our country, our borders

he emphasized. Interpreting the respect and gratitude of the Hungarian people, the head of state highlighted: dark clouds are gathering over us, the war in Ukraine has been going on for 10 months now.

He drew attention to the danger of escalation and to the fact that we need the Hungarian National Guard to ensure and preserve peace.

- We need their service, we need an army capable of protecting the Hungarians and Hungary - stressed Katalin Novák.

Prior to this, the head of state also met with Yazidi women who, along with thousands of their companions, were kidnapped and abused by the Islamic State, simply because of their religious beliefs. According to the President of the Republic, they shared heartbreaking stories with him.

Hungary also helps in this situation through Hungary Helps, he added in his post on social media.

As we wrote: the head of state visited many places in recent days, including Tell-Askuf, which experienced the horrors caused by the Islamic State in the last decade. Several buildings and the church of the settlement had to be rebuilt, in which Hungary took the lion's share, MTI wrote.
