Small village shops can apply for HUF 1-3 million subsidies, the government commissioner responsible for the development of modern settlements announced at a press conference in Budapest on Thursday. Alpár Gyopáros stated that the amount can be won once. The support is 100 percent pre-financed, and it does not require self-reliance.

The amount won can basically be spent on operating costs, such as rent, utility bills, accountant or lawyer fees. The government commissioner stated: a few weeks ago, the cabinet decided to throw another lifeline to the small shops operating in the villages.

The Russian-Ukrainian war, to which the European Union responded poorly with sanctions, presented Hungary with an economic challenge and an energy crisis, and the resulting damages hit even less capital-poor convenience stores even more, emphasized Alpár Gyopáros.

All business owners who operate small shops in settlements with less than 2,000 inhabitants, where they typically sell daily consumer goods and basic foodstuffs, can apply for operational support. The subsidized period is one year: from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023.

Although the call for tenders will be available from Thursday, the submission period will only start next year: it will be possible to submit tenders from January 12 to 31 . Alpár Gyopáros indicated that the details can also be viewed on the websites of the government, the Hungarian village program and Bethlen Gábor Alapkezelő Zrt.
