The International Károly Prize has been awarded every year since 1950 to a person or institution with outstanding merits in European unification. It says a lot about the award that the previous recipients include, for example, Emmanuel Macron, Klaus Iohannis, Bill Clinton, and Hungarians György Konrád and Gyula Horn.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Ukrainian people will receive the International Charles Award in 2023, the committee deciding on awarding the prestigious prize in Aachen, Germany, announced on Friday.

In the justification presented in the announcement of the city hall, it was emphasized that the Ukrainian people are victims of an "unspeakably brutal Russian offensive war" that is contrary to international law, but under the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskiy, they protect not only the sovereignty of the homeland and the lives of citizens, but also "Europe and European values."

As they wrote, Russia's war is "directed against freedom and democracy, human rights and multilateralism, against the European social, security and peace order", and its purpose is "to destabilize the European community of peoples and to rearrange Europe politically".

In this struggle, Volodymyr Zelenskyi is not only the head of state and the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army in this defense war, but "he is the motivator, the communicator" and the "engine" of the defense, and "the link" is the "unwavering face" of those who support Ukraine and the country defying Russian aggression between".

The president is a "support and role model for his people" who stands up to "loss of hope and discouragement", fights to provide the equipment necessary for daily life and defense and to maintain the belief that Ukraine is "a free, independent and sovereign member of the European family of nations ” can be a country.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy gives strength to the whole of Ukraine, but also to the European Union, to believe in these ideals, thus "serving as an example for all Europeans"

says the justification.
