While Brussels is trying to completely ignore the results of the last anti-sanctions national consultation, the European Union has not been able to launch a single initiative in recent decades in which as many people expressed their opinion on EU affairs as in Hungary.
Brussels was completely fired up with the consultation on the future of the Union, the European Year of Youth, and the institution of the European citizens' initiative. In connection with the latter, it is worth recalling that the action launched to protect national minorities was the most successful, but it was swept off the table by the Brussels elite, who were not elected by anyone. On the other hand, they want to cancel the time change by referring to a signature collection in which less than one percent of the population of the Union participated.
The EU also declared war on referendums after the draft EU constitution was defeated in three member states in 2005 and 2008. The European Commission launched a shameful attack on the national consultation on the Brussels sanctions. A spokesperson for the Commission was able to say that
"we took note of the results of the consultation in Hungary and the very low participation".
The statement is downright pathetic when you look at how the Commission celebrated one of its own consultations that failed miserably.
A huge fall
From October 22 to November 21, 2021, feedback from young people was awaited in connection with the "European Year of Youth", for which 2022 was designated. Most of the participants in the survey came from Greece, Italy and Spain, and since they proudly announced that they received responses from "every corner of Europe and beyond", it is reasonable to believe that the number of responses is in the millions or even tens of millions. In comparison, they emphasized with almost heart-pounding pride that they received "almost five thousand" responses. The documentation discussing the detailed results also reveals that the "almost five thousand" participation was actually 4,686 people. That's how many people participated in a European Union consultation. 4,686 people out of 60 million young people in Europe. And in the current Hungarian national consultation, nearly one and a half million, which, according to the European Commission's funny-embarrassing reaction, is a "very low turnout".
Half as many people participated in the entire EU consultation
It is also worth recalling that just a year ago, the European Union organized a large-scale pan-European consultation on the future of Europe. All citizens of all 27 member states of the Union could participate in the consultation entitled "Conference on the Future of Europe". More than 447 million people live in the European Union, of which more than 360 million are over 18 years of age. According to the official Brussels data, 53,632, i.e. fifty-three thousand six hundred and thirty-two people, took part in the consultation online and 721,487, i.e. seven hundred and twenty-one thousand four hundred and eighty-seven, in person.
So, only 775,119, i.e. seven hundred and seventy-five thousand and one hundred and nineteen people, took part in the consultation organized by the entire European Commission, European Council and European Parliament for a whole year, out of the 447 million European citizens and 360 million European adults surveyed. Half as many as at the Hungarian national consultation on the Brussels sanctions - previously wrote Tamás Deutsch, member of the Fidesz European Parliament.
This is how Brussels spat in the face of democracy
In connection with the so-called "Brussels democracy", it is worth recalling how the Commission deals with the so-called European citizens' initiative. The European Citizens' Initiative is a kind of petition and was one of the most important innovations of the Lisbon Treaty. Its aim is to increase democracy in the European Union. The citizens' initiative enables at least one million EU citizens living in a significant part of the member states to directly submit to the European Commission legislative amendments that fall within the EU's competence and affect them.
In recent years, several initiatives have naturally been launched, among which the collection of signatures launched for the national regions stands out. Although more than one million signatures have been collected, according to the European Commission, the EU does not have the authority to create legislation in the field of minority rights protection. The European Commission will not initiate a legislative procedure in the matter of the protection of minority rights even after the collection of signatures has been completed and after the recommendation of the European Parliament, according to the Commission's summary published on January 15, 2021. The document reveals that, according to the Commission, the EU does not have general legislative competence in the area of the protection of national minorities and the use of minority languages, this is a competence of the Member States.
As is well known, the National Minority Protection Initiative - which focused mainly on the language rights of indigenous national minorities and the financial support of the regions they live in - is the first civic initiative that won the European Parliament's official approval in December 2020 with an overwhelming two-thirds majority. The initiative launched in 2013 has come a long way, as the European Commission only registered the proposal package after the judgment of the EU court, thus becoming a European matter.
According to Loránt Vincze, the EP representative of the RMDSZ, the European Commission has failed indigenous minorities. In his announcement, the representative assessed as follows:
"The EC rejected the request of those for whom the preservation of the European linguistic and cultural heritage is not a nice-sounding slogan, but an everyday challenge."
On behalf of the initiators, Loránt Vincze thanked all those who believed in the cause all along, stressing that "we have created value over the past eight years: the Hungarian community in Transylvania has never had such an international success".
