The President of the Hungarian Republic reminded that this weekend was Zoran Milanovic's first official visit to Hungary, and that the courageous stance of the Croatian head of state could greatly help European leaders to see clearly.
The Russian Gazeta.ru reported that Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, after his meeting with Katalin Novák, called on the EU at a press conference in Budapest to take action against the violation of the rights of Hungarians living in Subcarpathia, Ukraine.
According to reports, Milanovic said,
"he does not understand why the European Union is silent on the matter".
Recently, Hungarian flags were removed from several public buildings in the Transcarpathian town of Munkács, and Hungarian-language inscriptions were dismantled. In addition, the employment contract of István Shink, the director of the Hungarian school in Münkacsi, was terminated.
Commenting on this, Novák reminded that 150,000 people of Hungarian nationality live in Transcarpathia. Novák called it unacceptable that the local authorities had violated their rights and made it clear to Milanovic that Hungary would not turn a blind eye to him, even in view of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
