A few days ago, it was reported that the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs visited Hungary for the first time since 2011, and Justice Minister Judit Varga described Hadja Lahbib as an excellent partner and a party truly open to genuine dialogue. Today, the news is that Belgium, together with Luxembourg, will join the lawsuit related to the Hungarian Child Protection Act on the side of the European Commission. It seems that in Hadja Lahbib, only discussions with NGOs operating in Hungary left a mark...
Belgium and Luxembourg are joining the European Commission's action to establish a breach of obligation submitted by the Brussels body to the Court of Justice of the European Union in connection with the Child Protection Act last December, reported the French-language Belgian daily La Libre Belgique.
In its action against Hungary, the European Commission objects to the legislation ensuring stricter action against pedophile offenders, as well as to the prohibitions and restrictions contained in some of the amendments to the law, in order to protect children, to deviate from the self-identity corresponding to their birth sex, to change their gender, and to promote homosexuality and/or are related to display.
According to the report, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that Belgium will intervene in the proceedings initiated at the EU court to support the European Commission's action against the Hungarian legislation that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The EU committee believes that the legislation violates the provisions of the internal market, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and EU values, they reminded.
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said that Belgium sees that the rights of sexual minorities are under increasing pressure in many countries, including Europe. According to him, this became clear, among other things, during the discussions held with human rights NGOs last week during his visit to Hungary. "This is a worrying trend that must be reversed," added the Belgian foreign minister.
Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn told journalists that his country will also intervene in the procedure on the side of the European Commission, they informed.
Last week, Judit Varga wrote on her social media page that in her meeting with Hadja Lahbib, the issue of the rule of law was also discussed, the Hungarian Minister of Justice emphasized the importance of transparency, that Hungary and "the Hungarian rule of law cannot be judged solely on the basis of the opinion of biased NGOs ". According to the Minister of Justice, similar meetings are also important so that "parties who are really open to real dialogue" get to know and understand each other's positions. "Hadja Lahbib was an excellent partner in this as well," said Judit Varga, thanking the Belgian politician for his visit in the post.
