The support for peace in Ukraine is much stronger in the UN than in the European Union, where anyone who talks about the importance of a diplomatic settlement is immediately portrayed as a supporter of the Russians, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Thursday in New York after meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres .

According to the ministry's press release, the head of the ministry emphasized: the atmosphere in New York is quite different from that in Brussels when we talk about the war in Ukraine, because if someone in Brussels talks about the importance of peace, they are immediately portrayed as a patron of the Russians, which is obviously insane.

"This is not a football match where you have to support one side, this war has no winners and there will be no winners , this war only has losers, this war only causes damage, and the longer this war lasts, the more damage it causes and the more losers there will be," he said.

Here, the representatives of the world outside of Europe do not really understand why Europe or at least some European countries or some European actors want to make a global war out of this war that seems regional to them, he said.

Here, the desire for peace, the support for peace is much greater than in Brussels. Countries outside of Europe also suffer from the consequences of the war, despite the fact that they are geographically far away from it, he added.

Péter Szijjártó underlined: a diplomatic settlement is only possible if the parties directly or indirectly facing each other are willing to negotiate, which requires communication channels.

However, as he said, there cannot be a better channel of communication than the UN, since the world organization was created precisely so that countries that are at war or in hostile relations can talk to each other.

"That's why I also asked the UN Secretary General to do everything possible to ensure that the UN can fulfill this role, so that the UN can be a mediator or an organization that provides a platform for discussions in this war," he said.

He then pointed out that so far there have been two attempts at mediation that have been successful, and both of them are in some way connected to the UN, such as the agreement on the resumption of grain exports, as well as the fact that nuclear accidents have so far been avoided thanks to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The minister stated: the UN should finally fulfill the role assigned to it by history here.

During the day, Péter Szijjártó held a bilateral meeting with António Guterres with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, as well as with the foreign ministers of Albania, Georgia, Guatemala, North Macedonia and Japan, the announcement states.
