" There are only two of us on the side of peace, the Vatican and Hungary. We can't complain about the company, but we have to expect serious consequences, " Viktor Orbán stated in his annual evaluation.
So far, there has been no official confirmation that there really is a peace plan drawn up by the Pope, but the position of the Holy See can be outlined based on the statements.
But what does the Holy See's peace plan consist of? We cannot give specifics, we can only rely on the reports of Leonid Sevastyanov, the president of the World Federation of Russian Orthodox Old Believers, who is in correspondence with the head of the Catholic Church, which should be treated with source criticism. Sevastyanov told the RIA Novosti news agency that the head of the Catholic Church had drawn up a plan for the Russian-Ukrainian settlement.
According to him, the Holy See's initiative includes the thesis that all parties are equally responsible in all conflicts. The goal of the plan is a long and just peace, and its guarantee is inclusion, respect for the other's culture and language, and cooperation between all parties. Preservation of human life and health is paramount.
In addition, it is extremely important that outside countries do not participate in the supply of weapons to the parties to the conflict. According to Sevastyanov, the Pope is proposing the Vatican as the venue for peace negotiations, as Rome is the city of peace.
Although there has been no confirmation from the papal offices that there really is a peace plan signed by the Holy Father, based on the statements made by those close to the leadership of the Vatican, the above principles and views beyond them can be outlined, writes Magyar Nemzet, which devoted a longer article to the topic .
In December 2022, during an Angelus prayer, Pope Francis himself emphasized the primacy of territorial integrity: he criticized the territorial annexations by Moscow in the zones occupied by the Russians, the annexation of the two people's republics. The Pope also asked both presidents to stop violence and be open to peace talks. We quote:
"Recently, a delegation of Ukrainian parliamentarians arrived, and they also met here in the Vatican. We are in contact through the Nuncio in Kyiv and the Ukrainian Ambassador to the Holy See. As for the Russian side, we have a nuncio in Moscow, and contact is made through the Russian ambassador here in the Holy See."
