A previously unknown baroque canal system, wall paintings, sections of medieval castle walls and walled-in ovens were also found during the ongoing renovation of the Veszprém castle quarter until 2025. Thanks to the investment, 18 historic buildings will be renovated in the old town of Veszprém, said the director of the museum of the Archdiocese of Veszprém.

Veronika Nagy said that many coins were found during the excavations, the earliest from the Árpád era, and the latest from the 19th century. century. In addition, contemporary household items, glass and ceramic vessels, and fragments of stove tiles were unearthed.

They want to preserve all the unearthed values, including the period furnishings of the buildings, the paintings, furniture, and the tiled stove, he added.

I would like to present the revealed values to the visitors within the framework of the Work In Progress 2023 (WIP '23) program series, which starts on May 12 and lasts until the end of the year.

Thanks to the program, buildings and artefacts can be viewed in various phases of construction. Those interested can look behind the scenes and get to know the locations during the works. Among other things, they will be able to see archaeological research, as well as get to know the masterworks of restoration.

At Easter, the liturgical events are already held in the renewed St. Michael's Cathedral. And from May, several buildings will be open to visitors again, including the Biró-Giczey house, which shows life on the former castle hill, the Körmendy house, which serves as a visitor center, and certain areas of the archbishop's palace, and the roof structure and facades of all the buildings involved in the renovation will be completed, added Veronika Nagy.
