Erindale High School in Mississauga, Ontario, has eliminated roughly 50 percent of its library books, including the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series, under a previously released policy aimed at "fairer" selection.

The school's controversial move took place after the Minister of Education issued an instruction to school boards at the beginning of the year in order to promote wider inclusion.

"Books published before 2008 that are damaged, inaccurate, or do not have strong circulation data (not borrowed by students) will be removed," the board said in a statement.

Damaged books taken out in high volumes will be replaced regardless of publication date, while older books may remain on the shelves if they are "accurate, serve the curriculum, align with council initiatives, and meet student interest and engagement," the board added.

"The Peel District School Board works to ensure that the books available in our school libraries are culturally sensitive, relevant, inclusive and reflective of the diversity of our school communities and wider society," they said.
