After Belgian police raided the headquarters of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels on Tuesday, German Christian Democrat politician Mario Voigt is reportedly being investigated for financial irregularities related to the 2019 EU elections.

The news exploded like a bomb on Tuesday afternoon that German and Belgian police searched the headquarters of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels. The oldest and largest European political group confirmed in an official statement that

both German and Belgian police searched the house in connection with an ongoing investigation in Thuringia, Germany. The party cooperates with the relevant authorities with full transparency and provides all relevant information and documents. As this is an ongoing legal investigation, the EPP does not wish to comment further.

Mario Voigt, the man at the center of the investigation, is a member of the German Christian Democratic CDU party, and since 2020 he has been parliamentary faction leader in his home state of Thuringia. In 2019, Voigt was also the head of the digital campaign of the European People's Party and party chairman Manfred Weber, when Weber was running for the next position of president of the European Commission.

Voigt has been the subject of numerous investigations in recent years for his non-political activities, particularly his work as a teacher and consultant at the Quadriga Hochschule in Berlin. The German politician is suspected of corruption and bribery due to several commercial transactions that took place in connection with his consulting work. Last September, the Thuringian state parliament revoked Voigt's immunity at the prosecutor's request.
