Hofi tells, Hofi even tells Kádár - this was the myth built around Géza Hofi, who was born 87 years ago and died 21 years ago, in communism. This was revealed by researcher and journalist Gábor Mező in the M5 História program.
Géza Hofi is probably the most famous figure of Hungarian cabaret, the comedian entertained Hungarian audiences for decades. The spokesman of the Kádár system was able to take advantage of the system at a time when everything was permeated by censorship.
Hofi was practically the court jester of the Kádár system - said researcher and journalist Gábor Mező.In every dictatorship, if you look at the entire course of history, there was always the court clown, the teller, he was one of those
- confirmed historian Zsófia Eszter Tóth.
Hofi had a very good relationship with János Kádár, says Gábor Mező, then added:
The Consensus Hunting Society was an elite group to which only the privileged could be invited. Hofi gave private lectures at the hunting association's New Year's Eve gatherings. Kádár was convinced that the comedian would never confront the authorities. In an interview with Népszabadság in the 1970s, Hofi talked about the fact that the system trusts him, so what he wants to say is not checked, but even then he can't shoot his jokes. He also needs to draw the boundaries of who and what he can criticize.
Kádár felt so secure in his own power that he could let them laugh at him a little.
Hofi helped to create - by serving the system - the appearance that life is better, that this is a more livable socialism, said Gábor Mező in the program.Géza Hofi was active until his death, and his fan base is still huge, his talent is indisputable, but his legend is false.
