American diplomacy has not given up on pressuring Hungary into a pro-war position, but Hungary remains convinced: peace is the common interest, the minister in charge of the Prime Minister's Office stated in Budapest on Wednesday.

Gergely Gulyás announced at his press conference: in recent days, everyone on the streets could face the fact that now it is not the opposition that is running a campaign with American money, but a campaign launched directly by the American embassy in Hungary.

This is unusual, especially among allies, said the minister, who called the biggest problem that the American campaign is a pro-war campaign.

At the same time, Gergely Gulyás called it a common interest for there to be a ceasefire and peace negotiations as soon as possible.

"There is no allied, diplomatic, or even friendly pressure that Hungary would not resist, " the minister emphasized, making it clear that the Hungarian government will not change its position.

He said: even under American pressure, we are not willing to change the fact that saving lives can only be done with a ceasefire and peace, and at the moment it seems that neither side can win this war.

The minister recalled that the position of the Hungarian government in recent years was completely clear and unambiguous. " We have always stood on the ground of international law ," he declared, adding that Hungary accordingly condemned the Russian aggression, helped Ukraine, and provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine and especially Transcarpathia.

The war in Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a year, now has more than a hundred thousand victims, so it is inevitably necessary that there be a ceasefire as soon as possible and that peace negotiations begin - emphasized Gergely Gulyás, who also noted that the current American action, the poster campaign, cannot change this government commitment.

In response to a journalist's question, the minister said: it is unfortunate to do the poster campaign in such a political environment, when the organizations openly connected to the current democratic administration have contributed significant funds to the campaign of the Hungarian opposition in the 2022 elections. This further strengthens the intention to interfere in domestic politics, and this is not correct, he noted.

Gergely Gulyás pointed out that in America, compared to Hungary, laws with much stricter consequences prohibit this behavior. It is time for us to catch up, he insisted.

For now, we see billboards, but this does not rule out the possibility that the campaign will run on other platforms later - Gergely Gulyás responded to another journalist's suggestion.

In response to a journalist's question regarding David Pressman, the United States ambassador to Hungary's press conference to be held on Wednesday afternoon, Gergely Gulyás said: if what was said there affects the Hungarian government in any way, the cabinet will react to it.

Also in response to the suggestion, the minister said: he regrets that the Index.hu news portal is not allowed to the ambassador's press conference, but the host American embassy dictates who is allowed in.
