The Ministry of the Interior (BM) is proposing a uniform 18 percent increase in the basic salary for nurses from July 2023, and is also proposing to raise the salary of those working in non-medical fields of the health sector.

In a statement sent to MTI on Wednesday, the Ministry of the Interior reminded: the government announced at the end of last year that it intends to continue raising wages in the health sector "despite the economic difficulties caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war and sanctions caused by the European Union".

After the wage increase for healthcare professionals in January 2022, from July 2023, nurses and those working in the non-medical fields of healthcare (including economic, technical, financial and accounting) can expect another basic wage increase, they wrote.

After the professional discussions, the proposed increase in the basic salary for nurses is uniformly 18 percent.

It was announced: the Ministry of the Interior will send the draft decree on this subject to social consultation, and professional consultations will also continue. The government's decision is expected in May 2023.

Despite the extraordinary expenses caused by the war, the government has allocated HUF 50 billion for this year's basic salary increase for nurses and health workers. The December 2022 government decision also states that the basic wage increase will continue in March 2024 - the amount will be decided later, the communiqué states.

It was written that, according to the BM's proposal, the basic salary increase for nurses in July will affect about 84,000 healthcare workers. The government is spending HUF 41.5 billion on the nursing wage increase this year.

They continued: this year, the government will provide HUF 8.4 billion to raise the wages of more than 24,000 people working in the non-medical fields of healthcare.

The ministry reminded that doctors' wages also increased on January 1.

The government also carried out the last step of the wage increase agreement previously concluded with the Hungarian Medical Chamber: the wages of doctors increased by another 11 percent from the beginning of this year, they added.

Attention was drawn to the fact that the government implemented the largest wage increase in the health sector since 2010, specialists receive twice as much as before the change of government in 2010, nurses' wages have more than doubled on average, the last time was in January of last year 2021 a 21 percent increase in the basic salary for nurses compared to the annual base salary.
