Pope Francis will arrive in Hungary on Friday morning. The biggest event of the three-day apostolic visit of the head of the Catholic Church will be the Mass in Budapest's Kossuth Square on Sunday morning.
Pope Francis will participate in ten private and public meetings and will speak a total of six times. The plane of the head of the Catholic Church will land at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport at ten o'clock on Friday morning.
Pope Francis goes from the airport to Buda Castle, where he is received by President Katalin Novák on the square in front of the Sándor Palace. After his courtesy visit to the head of state, the head of the church will meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and then with representatives of state authorities, social life and the diplomatic corps in the Carmelite monastery.
On Friday afternoon, Pope Francis will meet with bishops, priests, deacons, monks, student priests and pastoral staff in the St. Stephen's Basilica. On Saturday morning, Pope Francis will pay a private visit to the Blessed Batthyány-Strattmann László Otthon, which cares for blind children.
After that, he meets the poor and refugees in the Árpád-házi St. Elizabeth's Church on Rózsák Square in Budapest, and then goes to the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God, also in the square, to the Greek Catholic community.
On Saturday afternoon , Papp László will meet young people at the Budapest Sports Arena, and in the evening he will host the Hungarian Jesuit community at his accommodation, the Apostolic Nunciature.
After the papal mass in Kossuth Square on Sunday morning, as the last program of his visit to Hungary, the head of the church will meet with representatives of university and cultural life at the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics of Pázmány Péter Catholic University .
After the official farewell, the plane of the head of the church and the Vatican delegation will return from Budapest to Rome late Sunday afternoon. The organizers welcome everyone to the Mass at Kossuth Square without prior registration, only those invited can participate in the other programs.
The organizers recommend that participants go to Kossuth Square on foot or by public transport, given that parking is not possible in the area. More information about public transport routes and timetables can be found on the websites of the service providers (MÁV, Volánbusz, BKK).
It is forbidden to bring glass objects, glass water bottles, metal bottles, thermoses, alcoholic beverages, bicycles, scooters, and remote-controlled devices into Kossuth Square and other events of the papal visit. Water can be brought in up to half a liter in a PET bottle. It is forbidden to bring in pyrotechnic devices or any objects that are particularly dangerous to public safety. The introduction of live animals is also prohibited, with the exception of assistance and guide dogs defined by law.
At the same time, folding, small pilgrim chairs, flagpoles and signs, banners can be brought to the events, but the length of the poles - with the exception of the pilgrimage areas of the Kossuth Square Mass - cannot exceed one and a half meters. Due to the papal visit, there will be temporary closures in several places in the capital, which can be found on the police.hu website.
Pope Francis' apostolic journey between April 28 and 30, 2023 and all public events related to his visit are reported on by almost all public media channels. A total of six live broadcasts will be shown on the Danube - two each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
