According to American economist Jeffrey Sachs, Viktor Orbán is the only European leader who sees the situation in Ukraine realistically; the Columbia University professor spoke about the possibilities of peace in Ukraine in an interview published in the Thursday issue of Magyar Nemzet.

The world-renowned economist believed that the Hungarian Prime Minister understands that this is a senseless and unnecessary war caused by the expansion of NATO, and as long as it lasts, it will mean a tragedy and a dead end for Ukraine. Unlike other European leaders, he also recognizes that Russia will not accept defeat on the battlefield without the conflict escalating into a nuclear war, he told the paper.

According to the professor's point of view

to achieve long-term peace in Ukraine, the United States must first make it clear that NATO will not expand to Ukraine and Georgia, and Ukraine must declare its neutrality.

He added that the UN Security Council and other states, including Germany, Turkey, Brazil and perhaps Hungary, should jointly assume the responsibility and guarantee for compliance with the peace treaty.

In addition, NATO member states must strictly limit the rearmament of Ukraine, and Kiev must be given a clear roadmap to join the European Union as a neutral state - just like Austria.

Finally, sanctions on Russia must be lifted and trade between the European Union and Russia restored

- explained Jeffrey Sachs to the Magyar Nemzet.

He also mentioned that, in his opinion, the peace plan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is not a real peace plan, it is actually a plan to defeat Russia. In fact, it serves more propaganda purposes than real settlement.

He added that

Ukraine is by far the biggest loser from the failure of negotiations so far,

that is why Ukrainian leaders should be the first to look for the possibility of a negotiated peace agreement in order to end the killing and destruction.

The professor also emphasized that

Washington is fighting to maintain American hegemony, despite the fact that there is no longer a realistic chance for US global dominance.

According to Jeffrey Sachs, the rise of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - ed.), especially China and India, fundamentally changed the geopolitical reality. The international system has already been transformed into a multipolar one, but at the same time American politicians do not understand this, they are stuck in a way of thinking and a worldview that has been out of date for at least thirty years.

The United States should embrace multipolarity, uphold the UN Charter, do everything it can to combat the global environmental catastrophe threatening our planet, and confront the growing inequalities that undermine American society. Due to poverty, inequality, obesity, drug addiction, and the increase in the number of violent crimes, life expectancy has decreased to a level not seen since the 1990s.

The United States needs to stop pretending to rule the world and start solving its many and very serious internal problems.
