We are indebted to our heroes, to all the sons of our country who have ever sacrificed their lives for the country - emphasized the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of National Defense at the commemoration held on the occasion of the Hungarian Heroes' Memorial Day in Budapest on Sunday.

At the memorial stone of Hungarian heroes, Tamás Vargha said:

we are in debt, because they guarded and maintained an ideal for centuries [...], which helped Hungary to stay on the map of Europe from a thousand-year perspective.

As the state secretary emphasized, referring to the war in Ukraine: Hungary is one of the few countries on the continent that wants peace instead of war. Despite all the pressure, the Hungarian government firmly stands by its pro-peace position.

At the same time, he noted

keeping the peace is only possible if the country also has a deterrent military force.

He emphasized: This is why the government is continuing to develop the national defense, which is why it is building a 21st-century high-tech force, and has begun to modernize the organization, expand recruitment and speed up training. The state secretary called it a historical experience dating back several millennia that even the best weapons cannot bring the desired success if they are not wielded by a committed soldier who is ready to do something for his country and nation.

If you lack the heart, the conviction that our own land must be protected even at the cost of our lives, then it is not possible, or at least it becomes extremely difficult to protect the homeland, he stressed. He added:

the greatest sacrifice a soldier can make is only for his country, his family, and his comrade who stands by him. "That's why the examples of our armed men are also important, and that's why their actions, sacrifices, and in many cases their heroism must be emphasized again and again."

He drew attention to the fact that the lack of respect for the past is dangerous for the individual, but also for the entire nation.

"So we remember our heroes not only because it is our moral duty, but also because they remind us that we have something to lose and therefore something to protect"

- he said, adding that we can be here because there are, we had heroes, to whom we owe peace and freedom.

After the State Secretary's speech, flowers of remembrance were placed next to the military tribute at the memorial stone of the Hungarian heroes. On June 19, 2001, the Parliament adopted the law on perpetuating the memory of Hungarian heroes and on the Hungarian heroes' memorial day, according to which the Hungarian heroes of the past millennium who gave their lives for the country are remembered on the last Sunday of May every year.
