Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó thoroughly corrected Jurij Kamelczuk, who provoked during the debate of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, after the Ukrainian parliamentarian called the Hungarian government to account several times and compared the war in Ukraine to the 1956 revolution, Magyar Nemzet reported.
"In 1956, my country was overrun by the Soviet Red Army. At that time, the entire Western world was watching what was happening in Budapest and Hungary. All kinds of support were promised, Radio Free Europe spread the biggest hoax in our media history so far, that the Americans were just around the corner to help us. No one came to help, so my country remained under communist occupation until 1990. And the whole continent of Europe was very comfortable with this situation. Until 1990, we did not receive any kind of support, we did not hear any voice that would have supported Hungary being a free and sovereign country together with the other Eastern European partner countries," Péter Szijjártó began his answer to Jurij Kamelczuk during the debate of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . The Ukrainian parliamentarian held the minister responsible for several things, and compared the first days of the war in Ukraine to the 1956 revolution.
"In 1956, more than 2,600 Hungarians were killed and nearly 20,000 were wounded in Hungary in three days because of the Soviet army. Maybe they expected the same scenario in Kiev"
- he said.
Among other things, Kamelcsuk asked Péter Szijjártó why Hungary is blocking the European Peace Facility (EFP)'s next amount intended for military support to Ukraine. In this regard, the head of the ministry said that Hungary did not agree to disburse the money because the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Agency added the largest Hungarian bank to the list of international sponsors of the war.
"The only thing we asked the Ukrainian authorities, in order to be able to pass the proposal for the EPF in the European Union, is to remove this bank from this list, where it has nothing to earn. And your authorities did not even listen to this very simple request.
I would like to ask you to help us and remove the number one Hungarian bank from this list, which is very unfairly on it, and then we will gladly return to this issue," explained Péter Szijjártó .
Magyar Nemzet wrote that the Ukrainian representative also tried to teach the minister a lesson about the sanctions, who, when asked why Hungary blocks punitive measures, said: the government has not vetoed any sanctions package so far.
"We also made it clear that since the Hungarian people are not responsible for this war, we will not let the Hungarian people pay the price of this war. So when it comes to security of energy supply, we would never agree to sanctions that would jeopardize that.”
- he underlined.
In connection with the matter of the Transcarpathian prisoners of war recently transported to Hungary by the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ukrainian parliamentarian asked the head of the ministry whether they were really in Hungary, as well as how it was that Ukraine was not included in the negotiations, and when they could return home to their families. soldiers.
"I think it's good news that there are free and there were consultations between church and religious organizations, where the Hungarian state was absolutely not involved. Based on this agreement, these people were released, and they are free people, they can move freely in Hungary, they can do what they want, if they want to contact the Ukrainian authorities, they can do so freely, I can guarantee you that," Péter Szijjártó corrected Kamelcsuk .
