But it is also extremely important that there is some kind of buffer ( zone - ed. ) between Russia and NATO. This conflict ( zone - ed. ) could be Ukraine, which is independent, sovereign and has everything it needs

I assume that Ukraine cannot be a member of the military alliance as long as the war lasts. But overall, Ukraine's membership in NATO goes against our national interests
