Hungary has practically outlawed the right to asylum, claims the author of Spiegel.
The author of Spiegel writes that a ship full of Pakistani, Syrian and Egyptian migrants headed for Europe capsized off the Greek coast, more precisely not far from Pylos, and several people lost their lives. According to the writer, this would not have happened if the Greek coast guard was alert and did not leave the migrant boat alone for hours.
In his opinion, as a result of the "apathy" prevailing at the EU's external borders, societies are increasingly indifferent to everyday violence, and less and less empathize with minorities and "marginalized" people. They consider it normal to be withdrawn, scared, and excluded. Illiberalism and authoritarianism are getting stronger, public opinion is becoming more impatient and radical.
Of course, the author takes Hungary as a negative example, complaining that - as he puts it - asylum applications can only be submitted at the Hungarian embassies in Kyiv and Belgrade.
According to the author, with this, Hungary practically outlawed the right to asylum. Although the European Commission has initiated infringement proceedings, which does not happen often for such reasons, otherwise, according to the article, there are not many critical words from other member states.
