There is a real danger of the outbreak of the Third World War, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared on Monday night in the program "A big game" of the state TV Pervij Kanal (Első Csatorna).

His words were quoted by the Russian news agency Interfax. Lavrov stressed that "the danger is serious, real, and should not be underestimated." Comparing the current situation with the period of the Caribbean crisis, he explained that at that time "there were few written rules, (...), however, the rules of conduct were quite clear: in Moscow they were aware of how Washington behaved, and in Washington it was clear how Moscow acted".

He emphasized that the new START treaty (Russian-American nuclear weapons agreement) is still in force, but at the same time "all other means of arms control and non-proliferation have been practically destroyed."

According to the Russian foreign minister, during the Caribbean missile crisis, "there was a communication channel in which the leaders of the Soviet Union and the United States trusted."

“Now there is no such channel and no one is trying to create one. A few timid attempts in the early stages did not yield much. These included the fact that while they desperately tried to reach out to NATO all these years, when the organization expanded against promises, when Ukraine was loaded with weapons against our warnings, they encouraged its Russia-hating nature in every possible way, Petro Poroshenko (then the essence of the regime established under (President of Ukraine) and strengthened under (the current head of state) Volodymyr Zelenskyi," Lavrov said.

He also said that he would not like the current risks to be artificially inflated, even though they are already very significant.

Regarding what Moscow is willing to do to prevent the outbreak of the Third World War, the minister emphasized: "Russia has been doing quite a lot for many years."
