There have been previous examples of the transit zone being used for similar meetings.

The Holy Father offered Patriarch Kirill to meet at one of the Moscow airports during the refueling of the Pope's plane in the Russian capital during his flight to and from Mongolia on August 31 and September 4, Leonid Sevostyanov, head of the World Federation of Old Believers, who is in contact with the Pope, told RIA Novosti.

The head of the World Federation of Old Believers noted that in 2016 such a meeting took place at the Havana airport.

"If there is a positive response from the patriarch, then such a meeting can take place immediately," added Sevostyanov, who also pointed out that airports are transit zones.
