In Pécs, 35-40-year-old trees fall victim to the reconstruction of a market in a block of flats. The city protection association is preparing a demonstration against the cuttings. According to the residents of the area, there was a plan to rebuild the market that spared the trees - this was reported by Hír TV.
They wrote that for the reconstruction of the market, the city government won three hundred million forints in the TOP source Széchenyi 2020 program, from the European Regional Development Fund and from the domestic central budget allocation, with a hundred percent support intensity. They pointed out that the work area had been handed over a few days ago, and that the contractor would start work on Monday.
On the other hand, the residents of the area believe that there would be a solution for rebuilding the market,
which spares the trees, which is why the city defender civilians held a demonstration on Monday morning, at the same time as the planned start of tree felling.
We were already there at seven o'clock, but the workers did not arrive either then or later. It seems they heard our voice after all. After the works were delayed, we also suspended our awareness campaign, but we are keeping an eye on the area
- said the president of the Pécs City Beautifier and City Defender Association. Márta Fodor indicated that one of their fellow activists lives near the scene, who immediately informs the association, and everyone rushes to the work area if the situation requires it. Márta Fodor emphasized: they themselves support the development and reconstruction of the market, but not in accordance with the approved plans.
The covered hall should not be built towards the trees, but in the other direction, and then this beautiful grove would not fall victim to the investment
he pointed out. He added: they are asking Attila Péterffy, the mayor of Pécs, to suspend the felling of trees and to amend the plans so that damage to nature can be prevented.
