In an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro, Nicolas Sarkozy criticized Macron's excessively pro-Ukraine policy.
According to the article published on Wednesday, Sarkozy said the war can only end through diplomacy and negotiations. He added that Europe should clarify its strategy and strive for a compromise with Russia. According to him, it is a strange idea that Europe has chosen the path of financing a war in which it is not participating.
"Without compromise, nothing is possible and there is a risk that the situation could escalate at any moment. This gunpowder barrel could have frightening consequences," Politico quotes.
Sarkozy condemned Putin's attack on Ukraine, but at the same time pointed out that Russia is Europe's neighbor and, despite misunderstandings, "Europe needs Russia, and the Russians need Europe."
