One of the reasons for waste is that we buy things without thinking, we often buy things just because they are on sale - and after a few days the "good price" food ends up in the trash. At one time, however, people had the knowledge to recycle products that no longer had full value.

Júlia Dalmadi, a futurist food entrepreneur who is pursuing a no-waste mission, presented herself on Monday's episode of the Blue Planet podcast of former President János Áder.

The chairman of the board of trustees of the Kék Bolygó Climate Protection Foundation called it a fundamental problem that a third of the food produced is not consumed, it is thrown away, and a lot of food ends up in the garbage in Hungary as well. The question is how to save them and how to create value from food waste, he added.

Júlia Dalmadi explained: although we tend to hear that the population of the planet is growing and that it is a problem to supply the growing population with food, in fact we are already producing enough for everyone, but the food is not equally distributed in the world.

Most of us tried to find a solution for how we could produce even more, but food production takes a lot of farmland, water, and resources, and these are finite, the food futurist pointed out.

Supermarket shelves are crumbling, and we buy food just because it's on sale, he mentioned as one of the reasons for the waste. Another reason why a food product ends up in the trash is that it does not meet the quality standards, or it just doesn't look the way the consumer expects. In addition, there are raw materials, parts of a crop that we don't even know are rich in nutrients and could be edible, so we throw them away - continued Júlia Dalmadi.

János Áder suggested that old knowledge should be revived in order to save food. For example, if bread or buns have dried out, we can make breadcrumbs from them, sausages can be made from meat scraps when slaughtering a pig, jam or brandy can be made from excess fruit. So this has a culture, the former President of the Republic pointed out. He mentioned that winemakers from Villány invented that grape seeds can be powdered, and this grind can become a very healthy dietary supplement.

Júlia Dalmadi noted that we also throw away money if we don't use something. "We strive for comfort and it comes at a price, it ends up in our trash," he added.
