The European left would resign the pro-Israel Hungarian EU commissioner for announcing the withdrawal of EU funds intended for the Palestinian Authority. The European Jewish Association (EJA) stood by Olivér Várhelyi, according to which the accusations brought against Várhelyi are politically motivated and show a shocking insensitivity to the terrible, barbaric loss of human life.
The four factions of the European Parliament will initiate the dismissal of Ursula von der Leyen, the commissioner responsible for neighborhood policy and enlargement of the European Commission, if Olivér Várhelyi does not voluntarily resign from her position, writes the Tett és Védelem Foundation.
The Social Democrats, the Greens, the liberal Renew Europe and the far-left representative group unanimously support the letter signed by the twelve representatives, which is sent to the President of the EC.
Although the EP cannot force the resignation of a commissioner, the letter above clearly indicates that Olivér Várhelyi's position in the Commission has become subject to challenge.
The signatories criticize the commissioner because he announced the withdrawal of EU funds for the Palestinian Authority last week without authorization or consultation.
"Commissioner Várhely did not have the authority to make the unilateral decision, nor to announce it officially on his social media pages," the letter reads.
The enlargement commissioner's move was criticized by several EU member states, and even the UN secretary general spoke on the matter, urging the EU to refrain from making such decisions.
The letter writers emphasize that they will no longer condone Olivér Várhelyi's actions at the expense of the EU institutions and their democratic functioning, so they ask the Commissioner to resign. Otherwise, he should be relieved of his duties.
"Commissioner Várhely's actions not only undermine the image of our institutions, but also the trust of EU citizens in the Commission," they write.
In the letter, it is mentioned that Olivér Várhelyi is not the first to step out of line and go against the inter-institutional rules. At this point, they refer to the fact that the Enlargement Commissioner had previously temporarily suspended $215 million worth of aid to the Palestinian Authority "due to baseless allegations about the Palestinians" and suggested that part of the amount be disbursed only after the anti-Semitic textbooks published by the Palestinian Authority were amended. content chapters.
Palestinian officials stated after obtaining the funding that the EC ultimately did not set any conditions, but this is no longer mentioned in the letter. Nor about how Hamas has the billions that are paid to the Palestinians from all over the world, including the EU.
They are also shamefully silent about the fact that Palestinian youth are indoctrinated to hate Jews from their kindergarten age, among other things, through the anti-Semitic textbooks objected to by Olivér Várhelyi. The left-wing representatives keep silent about the fact that the family members of those who committed suicide attacks receive a martyr's pension, and that the rate of support increases in direct proportion to the number of Jewish victims. The signatories, who also forgot about the distribution of candy after successful terrorist attacks, firmly stand for the democratic functioning of the institutions, even though the Palestinian elite, corrupt to the core, last held an election 18 years ago, while Israel is the only democratic state in the Middle East.
In a social atmosphere deeply imbued with such verbal and physical aggression and corruption, there is no chance of consolidating democratic values and representing real Palestinian interests. The left-wing EP representatives are probably aware of these facts, for whom it is more important to shine as the anointed champions of morality even after the cold-blooded massacre of Jewish civilians in a duplicitous, hypocritical manner, than to look for real, viable solutions to a multifaceted problem.
In an open letter addressed to the President of the EC, the European Jewish Association (EJA) supported Olivér Várhelyi after the four factions of the European Parliament announced that they would initiate the dismissal of Ursula von der Leyen, the commissioner responsible for neighborhood policy and enlargement, if she does not voluntarily resign from her post.
The Commissioner is accused of violating EU institutions and their democratic functioning, saying that his actions not only undermine the judgment of our institutions, but also the trust of EU citizens in the Commission.
While in fact his measures protect and safeguard both our fundamental values and our moral compass, as well as the trust of EU citizens, the letter reads.
The EJA draws the attention of the President of the EC to the fact that anti-Semitic attacks and calls to abuse Jews have increased by 1,200 percent in Europe, and national governments and EU institutions must take action against this.
"Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi's announcement was especially welcomed by all our communities. He very correctly stated that »the current practice cannot continue. The level of terror and brutality is a turning point, and it should be," they wrote.
EJA reminds that after the Hamas attack, Germany reviewed the Palestinian development aid, Austria suspended its development aid, and Denmark and Sweden also decided to suspend development aid to the Palestinians until further notice.
It is pointed out: Olivér Várhelyi's post was made after a truly unprecedented and deadly terrorist massacre. Many countries followed his example, and world leaders strongly condemned the terrorist attacks.
"Both national governments and EU institutions share legitimate concerns as Hamas has turned agricultural and irrigation equipment paid for with European funds into weapons to attack civilians. He used the cement intended for housing construction to build tunnels in order to expand his terrorist activities.
As Jewish organizations representing thousands of European citizens, we believe that the charges brought against Commissioner Várhely are politically motivated and show a shocking insensitivity to the horrific, barbaric loss of human life.
In such an unprecedented time, when Europe must show unity against terrorism, it is no less shameful that there are those who prefer to forge cheap political capital from the graves of the dead and hundreds of hostages held by terrorists," the document emphasizes.
According to the EJA, the same type of terrorism struck the heart of Europe in Brussels, where two completely innocent people were killed in a terrorist attack that "naturally" followed the brutal murder of a teacher in Arras, France.
"Commissioner Várhely enjoys the full and unwavering support of European Jewry for his noble stance. For a stance that, unfortunately, too few political leaders represent against atrocities, barbarism and the attack on European values dear to our hearts," writes EJA.
