Several chain stores, such as Lidl, Penny, Lidl, Rossmann and Mountex, have already announced that their stores will be closed on December 24. Now, a poll has revealed that the majority of citizens are of the same opinion: on this day everyone deserves a rest.
The news exploded on Friday, November 10, when Hungary's leading retail chain Lidl announced that all their stores would be closed on December 24.
Since Lidl's announcement, several of the larger chains have made similar announcements.
Another multi has joined the CÖF Christmas shop closing initiative
"We have already thought about making it possible for anyone who can afford it to spend December 24 preparing for the holidays, surrounded by their loved ones. Lidl's exemplary step has strengthened us in this decision," Gyöngyi Szurma, Rossmann company manager, said in connection with the decision. -sales manager.
Lidl joined the CÖF initiative, their stores will be closed on December 24
At Mountex, on the other hand, they argued that they asked their own employees about the matter, who were in favor of the closure, so the company decided upstairs.
This is how things stand for now, it is not known whether other retail chains will join the initiative of Egyenlő.hu and CÖF, according to which all commercial shops should close on December 24.
Another store chain has joined the Christmas break initiated by CÖF
Until it becomes clear how other stores will decide on the matter, the Pénzcentrum polled its readers, asking them whether they support the December 24 closure or whether they believe that there is no place for closing stores during the Christmas period.
It is clear from the votes of many thousands of people that the majority is in favor of closing the shops on December 24.
The data show that 84.45 percent of people believe that everyone should rest on this day. In comparison, only 15.55 percent of the respondents said that many families still need this day for holiday shopping. So it seems so from the numbers
the closing of shops on December 24 may already be much more acceptable to the public than the general closing of shops on Sundays.
I think that the closing of shops on December 24 would be an excellent opportunity for the shops to show that their own employees are their first priority - Csaba Bubenkokó, president of the ezveta.hu trade union, told Pénzcentrum, adding that he thinks it is not a good direction if the stores calculate how much of a competitive advantage they would have if, for example, Lidl is closed, but they are open.
According to Bubenko, the role of non-wage benefits is extremely valued these days, and the 24-hour closing is a good message to employees.
Csaba Bubenko was also asked about the parallels between the general closing of shops on Sunday and the closure of December 24. But the head of the trade union stated that December 24 is about a single day, and although he did not even renounce the general closing of shops on Sunday, since it is not on the agenda today, in his opinion it should not be included. Of course, it is a special coincidence that December 24th falls on a Sunday, but according to the union leader, no wage supplement can compensate for the time spent with the family.
According to him, this is not a question of money, he also thinks that the reasons for the economic destruction of any company should be considered.
Bubenko also told Pénzcentrum that there is a difference between a retail initiative and the introduction of a national day off. The latter could really have an impact on the economy (even in a negative sense), but the former is unlikely. The latter idea can also be strengthened by the fact that, according to Pénzcentrum's industry sources, and also according to specific examples from the past (general shop closures), the chains can easily realize the income of a closed day (they did during the general Sunday closure) on the other days of the week.
So a shutdown on December 24 is not at all certain to have negative effects. What's more, an extended daily opening in front of you can also result in record traffic.
Csaba Bubenko also highlighted that there is a serious labor shortage in the profession. Therefore, according to him, it is by no means a profitable strategy for companies to work against their employees. He also said that, in his opinion, the workers should not be happy about the Sunday bonus (even if December 24 falls on a Sunday at all, most of the time it doesn't), but about the regular salaries.
