The well-known Hungarian linguist was 91 years old.

The news of László Grétsy's death was announced early Monday afternoon at the Eötvös Loránd University at a conference entitled The Future of the Hungarian Language - In the wake of linguistic changes. As they said, the well-known linguist himself was preparing for this conference, but he died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday.

After the announcement, he was remembered with a minute of silence. Not long after, the Hungarian linguist Miklós Blankó - who announced the sad news orally at the conference - also wrote about the death of László Grétsy on his social media page.

In 1960, László Grétsy obtained the title of Candidate of Linguistics at the ELTE BTK, then became a scientific associate and later senior associate at the Institute of Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and was also appointed head of the department dealing with the modern Hungarian language.

Later, he continued as the head of the Hungarian Language Department of the Faculty of Teacher Education, during which he was also elected co-chairman of the Hungarian Language Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and after his retirement he became its honorary chairman; similarly, he held the position of first president and then honorary president of the Association of Mother Tongue Nurses.

He was an employee of several linguistic journals - such as Magyar Nyelvőr and Edes Anyyelvünk - but he also worked as a columnist for Élét és Tudomány and Szabad Föld. He was awarded the Hungarian Heritage Award in 2007 and the Prima Primissima Award in 2012.
