Recently, a drunk driver knocked over the patina cross.

After many decades, the Macsán cross has been rebuilt, reports the József Attila Museum .

The cross between Makó and Apátfalva was knocked down by a drunk driver in January 2024.

The local government and several private individuals immediately got together and did not let the small sacred memory disappear, they began to restore it.

The restoration work was coordinated and organized by Zsuzsanna Szikszai, director of the József Attila City Library and Museum. Just last year, the ethnographer published a richly illustrated volume about the roadside crosses of the district. In the book, the director wrote the history of 91 crosses in 18 settlements.

There is a border cross in front of the former Macsán farm next to the Makó road. It was built on a square brick foundation. A cross decorated with flower tendrils can be seen on a brick plinth, with flower-patterned decoration around the body.

The cross was erected by László Macsán at the beginning of the twentieth century next to the vineyard road in front of his farm.

László Macsán was a hussar captain in World War I and spoke three languages. When he returned home, he married Zsuzsanna Boros, who, according to the family, was a very beautiful and intelligent woman. They had three children, Antal, László and Jolán. He had such a large farm that he was able to buy a Ford threshing machine and a harvester. Gray cattle were bred, which were even used as draft animals for agricultural work.

The re-establishment of the cross was supported by the Municipality of Makó City, Mayor Éva Erzsébet Farkas, ethnographer Zsuzsanna Szikszai, museum director and some private individuals.

The renewed sacred memory will be rededicated during the spring - on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

At the same time, the Aradi and Jángori crosses are re-inaugurated.
