Police cars were set on fire, African conditions prevail in the middle of Europe.

A violent clash broke out in The Hague on Saturday night between two Eritrean groups, in which rioters

they threw stones, set fire to police cars and other vehicles, and severely damaged a building

the Dutch police said. Riot police were dispatched to the scene and fired tear gas at the perpetrators. The mayor at the scene of the riots

declared a state of emergency, giving wider powers to the police.

The number of injured and arrested was initially unclear, the police said. It was also not initially known what specifically triggered the clash. Recently, Eritrean rallies in Germany and other countries have seen violence as supporters and opponents of the Horn of Africa country's authoritarian government have clashed.

Last summer, 26 police officers were injured during riots at the Eritrean festival in Giessen, near Frankfurt. A few weeks later

in Stockholm, Sweden, 50 people were injured at a festival organized by Eritreans.

Dozens of people were injured in Tel Aviv in September when a demonstration by opponents of the Eritrean government turned violent against an event held at the country's embassy.
