In a decade, the number of testators has doubled, and last year, about five percent more people made a will with the help of a notary than in 2022.
According to the experience of notaries, parents who are not living in their first marriage often prepare a will, especially if they have a child from a previous relationship, reports the Index . One of the reasons is that the parents want their non-common children to get an equal share of the common property.
"Those who want to decide for themselves who and how to inherit their property after their death should definitely make arrangements in time. In this way, they can give more to children who were given less in their lives, or they can secure the inheritance of children from their previous relationship. People who are not in their first marriage make a will more and more often, and with this they can also prevent family disputes between heirs"
Ádám Tóth, president of the Hungarian National Chamber of Notaries, told the newspaper.
The number of married couples making a joint will also increased last year,
more than one and a half times as many people visited a notary for this reason than in 2022. It is also common for spouses to make a will in favor of each other. According to the legal inheritance system, they do not inherit one after the other, they are not even entitled to usufruct on the property they live in jointly. Thus, in the absence of a will, they receive nothing from their spouse, and if they do not have a share of ownership in the apartment they live in together, the heirs can evict them.
