In the 2024 Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) list, Hungary ranked 37th, ahead of several neighboring countries. According to the ranking, the United States, Spain and Japan are at the top.

The list is led by the United States (5.24 points), followed by Spain, Japan, France, Australia and Germany. It is interesting that Hungary ranks 24th among European/Eurasian countries, ahead of neighboring Croatia, Slovenia and Romania.

The TTDI measures the set of factors and measures that enable the sustainable and flexible development of the travel and tourism industry. Although 71 of the 119 ranked countries improved their scores between 2019 and 2023, the average improvement is only 0.7 percent above the level before the coronavirus epidemic, according to the World Economic Forum website .

The ranking reflects the most recent data available at the time of collection (end of 2023). Scores range from 1 to 7, with 1 being the worst and 7 being the best. was compiled based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the World Bank, Unesco, the UN World Tourism Organization, the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization and other organizations .

Of the top 30 countries with TTDI scores in 2023, 26 are high-income countries. Nineteen of these are located in Europe and seven in the Asia-Pacific region. These countries offer a favorable business environment and travel conditions, adaptability to technology, excellent transport and tourism infrastructure, as well as rich natural and cultural destinations.

As they write, many low- and middle-income countries have improved, but the majority still scored below average.
