Despite the fines imposed by the Romanian authorities in previous years, there will be festive decorations this year on March 15 in Székelyudvarhely, announced Árpád Gálfi, the mayor of the town in Székelyföld.
According to the report of the Hargita Népe, on Thursday, the foreman joined the press conference introducing the March 15 event by phone. Said:
again this year, they are decorating the city center with Hungarian national symbols, even though the Romanian authorities punish them for this every year.
According to the mayor, there are currently several lawsuits due to the use of the red-white-green decoration, as in recent years he has regularly challenged in court the several thousand lei fines imposed by the Harghita County Prefecture.
In 2018, the agents of the Romanian government began to punish the mayors of Székelyföld who decorate their town with Hungarian flags, ribbons, and cockades on March 15 or October 23. The supervisors asked the court to annul all the fines, but they mostly achieved only partial success.
In recent years, the Romanian authorities have also fined the mayor of Sepsiszentgyörgy, Árpád Antal, several times for the March 15 decorations. As a rule, they objected to the fact that the Hungarian flag was displayed by itself, although according to Romanian law, the flag of another country can only be displayed together with the Romanian flag during official visits. Meanwhile, the mayors referred to the fact that the displayed symbols are not the same as the official flag of Hungary.
According to the online edition of the Hargita county daily, Árpád Gálfi asked the press and Hungarian historic churches for help in promoting the March 15 holiday program at Thursday's press conference, because, as he said, the mayor's office has no money for promotion.
Despite this, they are preparing a worthy program to celebrate the 176th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution and freedom struggle of 1848-49, it was said.
According to a statement from the mayor's office
the Strength, honor, Székelyudvarhely! The festive event begins at noon on Márton Áron tér with the parade and parade of the Székely Hussar Regiment. The guests of honor, Zoltán Babják, Mayor of Beregszász, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will also read the festive message. The highlight of the festive program is the performance of the Csík Orchestra, followed by the laying of wreaths.
In the main organization of the Sándor Tomcsa Theater, with the cooperation of the Haáz Rezső Museum, the city library and the cultural center, a series of events takes place in the city over several days. The program series ends on March 17 with the festive concert of the Székelyföld Philharmonic.
