The group of Tamásik Matusik, the former president of the National Judicial Council, includes the judge who decided to release the man on whose laptop the police found hundreds of child pornography recordings. The suspect was put behind bars last fall, but the court canceled his arrest a few days ago.
Since the prosecution has appealed, the order is not final.
Many people were shocked by the news that became public on Tuesday that the court recently canceled the arrest of the former head of the National Land Center suspected of child pornography.
The investigators found nearly four hundred child pornography recordings on the company laptop of the former executive, who was arrested last September and has been in prison until now.
The court's decision turned out to be that Ákos Hadházy inquired about the state of the investigation from chief prosecutor Péter Polt, who said: the police are continuing to investigate the crime of child pornography, and the prosecution requested an extension of the suspect's arrest on March 14, but this was denied by the Buda Central In its order, the District Court (BKKB) rejected it and ordered criminal supervision of the suspect, "for the purpose of which it prescribed the use of a technical device that tracks the accused's movements". However, the order is not final, because the prosecution has appealed.
According to information, the judge deciding on the termination of the arrest works in the group led by Tamás Matusik. As is well known, Matusik, the current head of the investigating judge group of the Buda Central District Court, was previously the president of the National Judicial Council (OBT).
Visiting the American ambassador
However, Matusik's name became known in domestic public life not only because of the aforementioned positions. For example, he met with the American ambassador, David Pressman, twice, together with fellow OBT member Csaba Vasvári.
Even their first meeting at the American embassy caused a huge indignation both in court circles and in the public, in connection with which the OBT later spoke out and tried to explain that it was a routine meeting, the principle framework of which was the "absolutely usual way in democracies".
At the same time, the president of the Kúria, András Zs. Varga, pointed out that
individual embassies naturally maintain contact with the institutions of the receiving state, but the place of official relations is usually the headquarters of the institution of the receiving state.
The President of the Court added that he was not aware that the relationship between the OBT and the ambassador of the United States of America was on the agenda at any of the two OBT meetings in October.
Reference point
It should also not be forgotten that the OBT, still led by Matusik, was the point of reference for the EU's rule of law reports and provided the arguments for withholding EU funds.
Even last summer, the fact that the European Commission repeatedly refuted the National Judicial Council with data and accepted arbitrary opinions that violated the personal integrity of many judges caused heated debates.
In relation to the comments regarding the Kúria, András Zs. Varga said, among other things, that
"I repeatedly and repeatedly reject the findings as a political attack questioning judicial authority without any basis. And the fact that all of this is based on the self-serving efforts of some former and current members of the National Judicial Council, I find very regrettable. I distance myself from these efforts not only on behalf of the Court, but on behalf of all decent Hungarian judges."
