They used an immediate call regarding the tasks to be done.

The news was published on the Facebook page of the Mljet National Park, and The Dubrovnik Times also reported on it.

On June 10, the national park was notified that a whale had swam up through the Adriatic Sea and was thought to have been spotted in the Mljet channel between Polača and Trstenik. Although the news may seem strange, it would not be the first time that a whale has entered a channel.

Whales regularly appear in the Adriatic Sea

"2024. on Monday, June 10, we received several reports of a whale sighting between Polača and Trstenik in the Mljet Channel. We don't have any more information about him at the moment. Please do not approach it by boat and report the location and time of sightings to np-mljet@np-mljet.hr

- pointed out Travelo on the Mljet National Park's Facebook page.

This is not the first time that a whale has swum up here. You don't typically see whales in the Adriatic Sea, but in spring and summer a few whales can appear on the islands of South Dalmatia and Central Dalmatia. This was the case last year and in 2020 as well.

The whales have no natural enemies in the Adriatic, the biggest threat to them is humans. They eat plastic waste produced by humans because they think it is plankton. The noise of the ships interferes with their communication and reproduction, they may even collide with them, which may even destroy them.

Sometimes they venture into the Adriatic

Whales are typically not seen in the Adriatic, but in spring and summer a few appear on the islands of South and Central Dalmatia.

The whale is a protected animal in Croatia, several subspecies live in different parts of the Mediterranean Sea, for example the pike whale, the common fin whale or the sperm whale. Every year, the Croatian Blue World Marine Research Institute draws attention to the fact that the animals are peaceful and that locals and tourists do not approach them, tease them or follow them with boats. However, it is not yet known to which subspecies the whale that appeared in the Adriatic channel recently.
