In addition to the free textbook package and discounted children's meals, parents can apply for a number of different financial supports for starting school. It's worth taking advantage of every opportunity, it's tens of thousands of HUF extra money per child.

Every year, the start of the school year puts a significant strain on the wallets of families with children, but parents can get help from a number of sources. Textbooks have been free for years, and a good number of children don't even pay for lunch at school or kindergarten, but even so, we can leave tens of thousands in stationery stores by the time we get all the elements of the mandatory textbook list, from the technology package to the last booklet, not to mention that the child you almost certainly outgrew last year's change shoes, maybe the stretched pen holder is ripe for replacement and you even have to pay the class fee.

For families with several children, the extra expense can add up to a serious amount, but if parents act carefully and use all available support, they can save many tens of thousands of forints.

The best-known form of support is the family supplement, also known as schooling support, which is HUF 12,000 to 16,000 per child, more for single parents or sick children. In view of the expenses for the beginning of the school year, the government transferred the benefits due in September to the families already at the end of August.

You should not skip browsing the websites of the local governments (perhaps call the social services department of the local government), because most localities provide all school children with some kind of contribution, typically in the form of coupons and vouchers that can be purchased at school supply stores.
