Jósvafő is home to the center of the Hucul Stud of the Aggtelek National Park, where nearly 200 beautiful horses are kept.
Currently, a good part of the Hungarian Hucul herd, which consists of horses with the best genetic and external characteristics, is owned by the Aggtelek National Park. The name Hucul itself comes from the name of the people of the North-Eastern Carpathians, who kept and bred this useful breed of horse. The Huculs traveled exclusively on horseback, and all loads were transported by horse. The hucul horse can walk with unshakable safety and incredible endurance on the rocky mountain terrain. By the way, the horse breed is much older than the Hucul ethnic group.
The hucul horse tolerates cold conditions well, it is a relatively small breed, undemanding and in excellent condition, so it can be kept without a stable for most of the year. Even in extreme cold, a simple shed building is sufficient for him.
It does not require care or feeding, and maintains its condition even with modest feeding. the Aggtelek National Park is located in Jósvafő, where nearly 200 of these horses live. Some of the mares and foals are housed from spring to autumn in the rugged stud farm in Gergés-lápa, located about 1.5 km north of Jósvafő. The horses roam freely on the several hundred hectares of plateau-type pastures, and spend the night in a paddock building that is open on one side.
A recent drone video shows a beautiful stud in the national park.
