Bulgarian President Rumen Radev signed the decree on Thursday that allows the law against "LGBT propaganda" to come into force in the country, which was passed by the parliament last week to protect children from the ideology of the woke, the office of the head of state in Sofia said.
A week ago, the Bulgarian parliament adopted an amendment to the law on kindergarten and school education, which prohibits the promotion of ideas and views related to non-traditional sexual orientation. The amendment was adopted with 135 votes, 57 against and 8 abstentions.
The law, among other things
prohibits "encouraging non-traditional sexual orientation" or "difference from biological sex" in schools.
The law provoked sharp debates at home, and from abroad, among others, the human rights commissioner of the Council of Europe called on Radev not to sign it, because it discriminates against people belonging to the LGBT community.
Following the just-announced presidential decision, the law can be published in the official gazette and thus come into force, the announcement states.
As a reminder, the Bulgarian Supreme Court decided in 2023 that changing biological genders through court proceedings is not allowed under the current legal framework. The court then emphasized that gender is recognized at birth and defines the person until death.
