At Friday's meeting of the European Political Community, the Slovak Prime Minister also made it clear that Ukraine's military successes are lacking, the sanctions did not harm Russia, contrary to expectations, and the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin is at a record level.
If the United States reduces Ukraine's funding and the European Union (EU) wants to increase it at the expense of its member states, Slovakia should not participate in such games, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated after the informal meeting of the heads of state and government of the European Union held in Budapest on Friday .
"If there are proposals to increase financial aid (to Ukraine) at the expense of EU member states, just because a major supporter (the United States) is out of the game, then Slovakia should not participate in such games, as the conflict has no military solution"
- said Robert Fico, whose words were quoted by the Slovak public service news agency TASR.
The Slovak Prime Minister pointed out that the current strategy of the EU is that Ukraine should win and Russia should lose the war, as well as to support Ukraine militarily and financially so that it is strong enough during the negotiations.
Robert Fico underlined: he does not see any of these strategies as working.
He added:
it is clear that Ukraine's military successes are lacking, the sanctions did not harm Russia contrary to expectations, and the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin is at a record level.
Robert Fico said: although it is not yet clear what position Donald Trump takes on the issue of Ukraine, as he said, he does not believe that the future American president wants to resolve the conflict in Ukraine by force.
It is more likely that he will choose the path of compromise or reduction of aid to Ukraine, he believed, adding: he cannot imagine that the EU would take on the entire burden of supporting the war in Ukraine.
The Slovak prime minister stated that the next American president, China and Brazil are now really interested in ending the war, and the EU should join them and exert pressure in the direction of concluding a peace that is acceptable to all interested parties.
In relation to one of the main topics of the Budapest summit - the competitiveness of the union - Robert Fico stated: whatever plans are discussed, they cannot limit social standards and car production, which is the basis of Slovakian industry.
