According to Mária Schmidt, communism changed countries and moved to America instead of the Soviet Union. In his article published on the Látószég blog, the historian also wrote that he now associates Orwell's 1984 with the beautiful new world advocated by today's Western progressives.

Schmidt recalls in his writing that when he first read Orwell's book 1984, banned in our country, in the 1980s, when he was still in samizdat, he recognized the Soviet-type communist system in which he lived. " Recently, however, when I took it up again, I only associated it with the beautiful new world advocated by today's Western progressives: the aggressive push of lifestyles and other minorities, the heating up and centering of race theory, the impossibility of freedom of speech, the disintegration of social cohesion, the elimination of solidarity" - writes. He then continues:

" Just as in the case of people's democracies, popular was a form of exploitation, so today's liberal has also become a cover word for anti-freedom . In the people's democracy, reactionaries and imperialist agents threatened progress, that is, the rule of the Party, more precisely the vanguard, in today's liberal democracies, the uninformed, old, stupid and nationalist masses and their populist leaders stand in the way of the global future. They are blocking the arrival of the supranational future, which eerily reminds us of the old one, which the communists wanted to internationalize not so long ago. On every official occasion, we had to sing the Internationale, that is, "the world will become international tomorrow."

Finally, a third quote:
"By the beginning of the 21st century, a significant part of the elite of the West suffered a nervous breakdown and has been envisioning a continuous moral crisis ever since. Its liberal democracy is experiencing a paranoid era, it has switched to panic mode and eliminated everything that could connect it, on which a common future could be built, including the most important principles: freedom of speech, equality before the law and solidarity. He declared war on Christianity, the nation, honest work, competition, in short, all those values that ensured the survival of Western civilization for centuries."
