There is exactly one month left to collect signatures for the European citizens' initiative launched by the Székely National Council (SZNT) for the protection of national regions, as the European Commission has extended the time interval for the second time in view of the pandemic, Prime Minister's Acting Katalin Szili said on Wednesday. He emphasized: this opened another round in the board's campaign launched on May 7, 2019.

According to Katalin Szili, by Wednesday, 1,152,486 signatures from 10 countries had been collected. The initiative meets the legal validity condition if the authorities of the individual member states authenticate the signatures, he explained, adding: therefore, they cannot sit back just yet.

Katalin Szili emphasized: they must make use of the one month in front of them, on the one hand, so that the validity is guaranteed with security and with sufficient attention, and on the other hand, to expand the community of solidarity that lined up for this case to the widest possible extent.

The prime minister's agent recalled: the SZNT's initiative aims for the Union's cohesion policy to treat with special attention those regions that are distinguished from the surrounding regions by national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic characteristics, and to ensure the structural foundations for the maintenance of these characteristics equal opportunities for direct access.

According to the regulations on citizens' initiatives, through the participation of citizens in the democratic and political life of the union, this institution contributes to the improvement of the democratic functioning of the union, he added.

to "mobilize our friends and acquaintances in the EU member states to sign the initiative" in the time that is still available , thereby increasing the number of supporters, since more than two and a half million signatures were collected with the other citizens' initiative, Minority SafePack together for the causes of indigenous minorities. Based on this result, you can safely consider the impact of civic initiatives as a movement that created European value. That's why, while we protect each other and our health, let's give a minute's attention to the national regions! - the prime minister's representative concluded his statement.
