The Festetics castle in Keszthely became the main filming location of the new, big-budget series presented by Netflix a few days ago as a royal palace.

The screenplay was based on Leigh Bardugo's novels. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, was filmed almost entirely in Hungary, the recordings lasted for about half a year from the fall of 2019 to the spring of 2020. At the very beginning, in November 2019, the film crew of about a hundred people worked in Keszthely, where the Festetics castle and its interior appear as the small palace of the tsar in the film.

Róbert Pálinkás, director of the Helikon Castle Museum, said that at the time of filming, they could not have known what role the castle would play, but they were also pleasantly surprised that its role was so spectacular. The castle of the Festetics has not been given such importance in a film for many years, and countless Hungarian and foreign films have been made here for decades. The last time the building was properly emphasized was during the filming of Kincsem.
