Prime Minister Viktor Orbán published a video post about the EU summit that started last night, in which he stated that Hungary belongs to the group according to which the costs of climate protection must be paid by large companies that destroy the climate.
"There is a group that would rather pay with people and families. In the case of an average Hungarian family, this can be up to HUF 20,000 per month. We cannot accept this, we support the solution that burdens the climate destroyers with the costs of protection," he said.
Justice Minister Judit Varga wrote the following on her Facebook page:
For the Hungarian government, environmental protection is a national matter. A year ago, we announced the Climate and Nature Protection Action Plan, the aim of which is to implement a climate-neutral, circular economy and protect our country's unique natural treasures.
In addition, Hungary was one of the first to enshrine in law the commitment to become a climate-neutral country by 2050. However, the set EU climate goals can only be realized by keeping in mind the principles of justice, solidarity and proportional burden sharing. That is why we oppose any solution that would place an extra burden on Hungarian households.
We do not support the introduction of a uniform EU carbon price in the residential sector, we will defend the results of the overhead reduction, we will not let the Hungarian people be burdened instead of the big emitters.
Because the costs of action against climate change should not be borne by the population, but by the biggest polluting countries and companies.
We will not give up on this basic principle!
