Tibor Benkő laid a wreath on the Memorial Stone of the Hungarian Heroes
Speaking to the public media on the spot, the minister highlighted: "on this day, we remember the heroes;
it has a historical past and tradition". He recalled: already in the First World War, it was formulated that it was necessary to remember the heroic soldiers who "sacrificed their lives and blood for the sake of the homeland" at the front .
In 1917, the first law was passed, which stated that heroes must be commemorated in settlements; the first monuments and plaques appeared already in the First World War. The Memorial Stone of Hungarian Heroes in Hősök Square in the capital city was inaugurated in 1929. The minister also touched on the fact that after 1945, the heroic monuments and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country's interests were forgotten.
Then in 2001, a new law was passed, which brought back the memory of heroes. Moreover, this was not only from the time of the First World War, nor was it only about the soldiers, but from the time of the conquest, it was about everyone who sacrificed and risked his life for the country, who does and makes sacrifices for Hungary and the Hungarian people. This law is also about the heroes who today, in this pandemic situation, risk or sacrifice their lives in order to "live safely"
the politician added.
Tibor Benkő said: Heroes' Day tells posterity that it is necessary to remember.
"We must remember the heroes to whom we owe our nation, the survival of our nation, to whom we owe the fact that we can live in peace and security," he said. It is a message for the future generation: "let's get ready to be able to serve the peace and security of our country at any time," declared the minister. On June 19, 2001, the Parliament adopted the law on perpetuating the memory of Hungarian heroes and on the Hungarian heroes' memorial day, according to which the last Sunday of May every year - May 30 this year - remembers the "Hungarian heroes of the past millennium" who gave their lives for the homeland.
The Minister of National Defense inaugurated the renewed Heroes' plot in the capital's Fiumei út cemetery on Sunday, during the commemoration of Hungarian heroes. In order to "strengthen our self-esteem and maintain our national existence", it is essential to find role models whose efforts are highly appreciated by posterity and set as examples for future generations to follow. Among them are soldiers. Tibor Benkő said.
