Gyula Molnár has been present in politics since the regime change, in 1990 he became deputy mayor of Újbuda and then a member of the Capital Assembly. From 1994 to 2010, he was a member of the National Assembly continuously with his mandate in the 16th electoral district of Budapest. In 2002, he was elected to the XI. district mayor, which position he held until 2010, while also acting as president of the National Association of Local Governments.

In 2010, he left the Parliament after 16 years, and then lost in the municipal elections, so Tamás Hoffmann became the mayor of the district.

At that time, a public prosecutor's investigation was launched against him, and he was acquitted of the charge of abuse of office only in 2014 by the Kúria. In 2016, he won the post of president of the MSZP against József Tóbiás, Tibor Szanyi and Tamás Harangozó, and in 2018 he returned to the Parliament after winning an individual representative mandate in the 18th electoral district of Budapest (which includes Budafok-Tétény and part of Újbuda). earned Later, due to the poor results of the MSZP, he resigned from the position of party president.
