Pilgrims arrive on horseback, with tusks, donkeys, and dressed as hussars on Sunday to the national shrine in Mátraverebély-Szentkút to ask for blessings on their animals and activities on the feast of Saint László.
Regina Kerekes-Dancsok, the press chief of the farewell pilgrimage site, told MTI: nearly 50 pilgrims come with their horses for the Sunday farewell, mostly riding from a 50-60 kilometer area, from Karancs, Jászság, Szécsény, Pásztó, for the personal offering and blessing at the beginning of the journey.
The 11 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by Gábor Mohos, assistant bishop of Esztergom-Budapest, who will bless the gathered with a relic of Saint László at the end of the ceremony.
The press chief added: the Catholic national shrine welcomes 200,000 pilgrims from all over the country every year. Pilgrimages by bus, by car, or on foot all offer visitors a different experience, as does the equestrian farewell, which is one of the most special events at the national memorial, and not just because of the sight. The journey of those who come here is not only about themselves, but also about their loyal companion, its needs, and sometimes its obscurity.
