Nearly 4,800 students were admitted to the BME
The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is accepting almost 4,800 new students. The average score of state scholarship students admitted to bachelor's programs exceeds 425 points, they said.
It was announced: in September, 4,727 first-year students will occupy the lecture halls of the University of Technology, which represents a 2 percent increase compared to the previous year.
They wrote that the excellence of the BME is well indicated by the fact that the number of applicants admitted to the institution's bachelor's programs and the average score remained high, and in fact both increased compared to last year, despite unfavorable demographic trends and the pandemic.
In the form of education with a state scholarship, the average score is exceptionally high, over 425 points, and even with those enrolled in the self-funded form, it is almost 420 points
they added.
In addition to the score limit, "the high average score and, together with it, the high number of admissions, are important data that better indicate excellence. The institution performs excellently in all of them," they emphasized.
According to the information, more than a thousand students can start their studies in the master's program in the fall, and more than one thousand and one hundred more were admitted to one of the BME's master's courses in January this year.
In the current admission procedure, 21 percent of the almost 11,000 young people applying to the university selected a master's program, which is four percentage points higher than the national rate, even though this is not the main admission procedure for the majority of BME's master's programs, but the January one, they noted.
He drew the applicants' attention to the fact that the university also offers state scholarship programs in most of its bachelor's programs in the current supplementary admission procedure. More details are available at felvi.hu.
Corvinus: almost a quarter more applicants
This year, 24 percent more applicants applied for the courses of the Corvinus University of Budapest in the first place than last year; more than twice as many people applied for courses starting in English.
According to the announcement, the strategic goal of Corvinus, which was maintained by the foundation two years ago, is to become the best university in the Central and Eastern European region in the field of economic and social sciences by 2030.
"This is what the university wants to achieve with elite training and internationalization," they wrote.
For the sake of high-level, quality education, this year compared to last year, Corvinus accepted fewer students for its basic courses, with higher score limits.
"In this way, the instructors can provide high-quality education to students with outstanding abilities instead of mass training," they said, adding that Corvinus expects students to "primarily focus on their studies during their university years." For this - as they continued - the university provides all the support: the best students are provided with a scholarship of up to HUF 70,000 per month by the Maecenas Universitatis Corvini Foundation, which is more than twice the amount of the state scholarship.
It has been reported that starting this fall, the most popular and largest core course at Corvinus, farming and management, has been completely renewed. "It was transformed into a modern business basic course based on the Western European model, providing generalist knowledge, into which the former trade and marketing, tourism-hospitality, human resources and rural development agricultural engineering basic courses were integrated," says the written summary .
The communique called the major advantage of the renewed major that the applicants do not have to decide at the age of 18 exactly which business field they want to specialize in, they will be able to make this decision in the last year of the training.
According to the information, the point limit required for the free training place in the Hungarian-language economics and management basic course increased by 24 points, and it was possible to get in with 451 points. Last year, 434 points were required for the English-language training form of the same major, but this year it was already 466 points. The university admitted a total of 718 students to the various courses of the major, it was announced.
Corvinus also pointed out that 35 points more than last year were needed to get into the applied economics basic course, which is unique in the country. With 445 points, you could get into the Corvinus Scholarship for this course, and for the English-language subsidized form of education, you needed 442 points for admission.
They added: "extremely high", 472 points were needed this year to get a place with a scholarship in the international management course, which started only in English since last year, and a total of 198 students were admitted to this course.
It was also not easy to get into the university's popular social science courses this year - they wrote, explaining that 468 points were required for the English-language international studies basic course, while 442 points were needed for the English-language communication and media studies basic course.
The announcement called the internationalization of Corvinus a strategic goal, an important part of which is that the university advertises more and more courses in English, or only in English.
In the case of courses in English, from September 2021, Corvinus Scholarship students will no longer have to pay a foreign language contribution.
This year, applicants' interest in foreign language courses increased significantly, more than twice as many applied for courses in English as the first place compared to last year. 20 percent of all students accepted in this year's admission procedure applied from abroad, despite the year-long epidemic situation.
The university indicated that it accepted about the same number of students for its master's programs this year as last year, a total of 641.
In the following years, the aim is to start the majority of master's courses exclusively in English, they emphasized, also stating that for those master's courses where it is justified and feasible, a one-year master's program will be introduced on the Western European model.
As part of the renewal of the Budapest Corvinus University, in the last two years it has started to transform its training portfolio on the Western European model. In the coming years, the goal is to create a basic training portfolio that provides generalist knowledge and a specialist master's training portfolio, launched with fewer majors than at present, by launching renewed and unique new majors that reflect the needs of the labor market, they wrote.
A record number of applicants at the BGE
This September, 6,448 first-year students can start their studies at the Budapest University of Economics (BGE), 16 percent more than last year. As in previous years, the proportion of students admitted as state scholarship recipients continued to increase this year.
In their press release, they wrote that BGE is the third most popular university in the country based on the number of applicants, which, as they put it, "owes its recognition to its well-designed training portfolio that is adapted to market needs, as it offers five of the ten most popular basic courses in Hungary".
As they added, this year's admission results prove the popularity of the institution, which has been operated by a foundation since August 1, and the "unbroken interest" in business-focused courses. By way of comparison, they announced that last year 5,547 students were admitted to the three Budapest faculties, so this year the number of newly admitted students is 16 percent higher.
As in previous years, the proportion of students admitted as state scholarship recipients increased this year: almost 67 percent of the admitted students will begin their studies as state scholarship recipients, the university announced.
In addition, all three faculties of the university – Faculty of Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism; Faculty of Foreign Trade; Faculty of Finance and Accounting - the number of admitted students increased this year.
According to the written summary, the majority of applicants voted for the bachelor's degree courses in trade and marketing, business and management, tourism and hospitality, international management, finance and accounting, and business informatics.
"This year's results exceeded all our expectations, especially that we were able to increase our attractiveness even compared to the record-breaking year 2019," quoted Rector Balázs Heidrich in the communiqué, who says that this clearly shows that the developments carried out in recent years have been successful, "so more and more it is obvious to many applicants that studying and obtaining a degree at BGE is an excellently profitable investment in the future".
The announcement also mentioned that those who missed the admission process or were not admitted can submit their application to the Budapest University of Economics within the framework of the supplementary admission procedure.
Admission background information
In addition to the institution's capacity, the point limit for a course is influenced by how many people applied there and with what results. The higher the number of high-scoring applicants, the higher the score limit will be. Higher education institutions can decide to set the minimum score for applicants higher than the legal requirement. In this case, it may also happen that the institution does not use its full capacity in a given course.
According to the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, almost 110,000 students applied to a college or university this year. Balázs Hankó, the deputy state secretary responsible for higher education, spoke on M1 about the fact that 11 percent more people applied for higher education this year than last year. According to him, this clearly confirms the success of the Hungarian higher education system.
Those who have not been accepted now need not despair either, as they will be able to apply during the supplementary enrollment period.
During the supplementary admission process, only one course could be selected, and only those who were not accepted to any of the courses they indicated or who did not apply to higher education at all this year may apply.
Last year's point limits in some majors of major universities:
- Semmelweis University Faculty of General Medicine, general medicine department 430
