The first transgender bishop in America was installed. (We didn't know what was missing!) The new church leader will be responsible for nearly two hundred churches.

Megan Rohrer was named Bishop of the Pacific Synod at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco on Saturday. According to the Independent, he is the first transgender bishop not only in the United States, but in the entire world. Rohrer will be responsible for nearly two hundred congregations in Northern California and Northern Nevada in the Evangelical Church of America (ELCA).

According to the congregation and the crowd gathered in front of the cathedral, the new bishop can bring hope to the LGBTQ community.

There are many places where people experience violence. Many believe that faith forces believers to divide and distance themselves,” Rohrer said. He added that there is no person whom they would not like to see in the church, in the community of God.

Rohrer previously served as pastor of Grace Evangelical Church in San Francisco and as a chaplain coordinator for the city's police department. He was selected for the six-year term in May this year after the then-bishop announced his retirement.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the new bishop is married with two children. Ross Murray, deacon of the ELCA and executive director of the GLAAD Media Institute, said in a statement that Rohrer's installation is a historic moment in the history of the LGBTQ church.

With 3.3 million members, the ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, the Guardian wrote.
