Since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic, the Nézőpont Institute has been investigating whether Hungarian adult society considers the strictness of government measures sufficient. After the end of the third wave, during the entire summer and early autumn, six out of ten (61-59 percent) found the strictness of the rules just right. Because of the high vaccination rate, this essentially meant broad social agreement with the normalization of life, which brought many a pleasant holiday with a low disease rate.

In the time series research, the situation changed beyond the margin of error for the first time last week. Although the proportion of those who agree with the current level of strictness did not decrease beyond the margin of error (58 percent), the proportion of those who wanted more enforced discipline increased from 25 to 30 percent , and the proportion of those who considered the current measures too strict decreased to 8 percent. So three out of ten demanded the tightening of measures against the coronavirus last week, which the government announced just after the data collection by the Viewpoint Institute was completed on Thursday morning.

With this well-timed announcement, the cabinet probably preempted the turn of the social mood in favor of austerity, Nézőpont believes.

The research carried out in the last week of October also showed that the tightening of the measures was primarily desired by government critics. Six out of ten of them (61 percent) were in favor of tightening and only two (19 percent) said that the current rules are adequate. On the other hand, three-quarters (76 percent) of the pro-government part of society were satisfied with the strictness of the measures , presumably mainly with the emphasis placed on vaccinations, and only one-sixth (17 percent) wanted greater discipline. The government therefore satisfied the needs of its sympathizers and critics with its actions. The increase in vaccination coverage and the tightening of mask use will apply at the same time, they remind.
