On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the revolution and freedom struggle, the Military History Institute and Museum of the Ministry of Defense (HM) is making a new 1956 database available online.
In their announcement sent to MTI, they highlighted: in the "Memory of our Military Heroes" project, after the "Sacrifice of Hungarian soldiers in the Great War", this will be the second database accessible to anyone free of charge.
The 56online.militaria.hu website also contains data on soldiers who died during the 1956 revolution and war of independence. In addition, the interface provides a comprehensive picture of the events and prominent people of the era, and provides assistance with a number of interesting digital content for students, teachers, researchers and those interested in family history.
All photos from the museum's photo archive dating back to 1956 will be accessible to everyone and digitally researchable on the website. In the online catalog, it is possible to flip through the photo albums related to the revolution and search in detail among the event photos.
In addition, weapons and military equipment are also presented on the online interface, which were not possible due to lack of space at the "Hungarians - Weapons" temporary exhibition that opened on October 22. In addition, those interested can browse through content that may take longer to read, listen to, and view, so it is even more convenient to study from home, they noted.
The "56 Once and Today" photo album guides users on a real tour and at the same time "virtual time travel": juxtaposing the pictures taken of today's Budapest with the help of archival photos showing the events of the 1956 revolution and war of independence in the capital, reads the announcement of the Military History Institute and Museum.
